Jan. 1999 to Feb. 1999: Unchained Dead

Wind assesses the situation faced throughout this daring adventure in his usual, brilliant way:

There is more going on than I know...
The heroes were called from Glantry City to attend the funeral of a knight who was Kain's close (but unknown) friend. They ventured forth from the city gates, were lulled into a false sense of security by a lack of enemy soldiers, then ambushed later that night. The heroes arrived at Longbridge unscathed, however most of the merchants that they were traveling with were brutally slain. During the ceremony, Kain dropped his end of the coffin (he was a pall-bearer), and with a swirl of mist, the party was magikally transported to the cursed land of Falkovia with no possessions beyond the ceremonial attire of a funeral.

The grim sight that awaited the valiant ones was a field filled with impaled people. Whole families, regardless of age or gender were put to death in this most gruesome manner. Mr. Wind interrogated one of the victims who was still alive, a lady named Illona who was looking for her daughter named Smiranda. The conversation went as follows:

Wind: Why are? What? Huh?

Illona: Curse the Talons! May they drown in the blood they shed!
It was found that the Talons were the local police force that brutally enforced the laws of the evil and deranged lord of the realm. The heroes soon encountered a squad of Talons, who they killed quickly, then went into hiding for a couple of days. Torg did some reconnaissance and found suitable disguises that allowed the group to wander at will.

While out and about, the heroes met Hathril, an accordion playing elf who was also stuck in this accursed land. She explained that there were assassins about (she had found and killed one already) who had magik glass daggers that sucked the life out of their victims. She convinced the party to meet her and her companions later that night at a church outside of town. The party arrived just after the elves were killed, but defeated the assassins. One of the assassins, who was alive even though it was apparent that he had been impaled, told of the Ebon Fold assassins and their crystal daggers. On the advice of a letter left by Hathril, the noble adventurers went out to seek Mircia, the wizard in the Radiant Tower. This was the first episode of Torg taking off all of his clothes and armour. Mr. Wind was possessed by Ladeslis, the lord of the realm and a student of Azlan, and attacked the party. Ladeslis was exorcized, and Kain kicked a puppy so hard that it died.

The Radiant Tower turned out to be a less-than-radiant magik school. Mircia turned out to be a slightly mad wizard who discovered how to return the life-force from one of the crystal daggers to its victim. The party found a secret passage that led to an elaborate underground structure. Kain kicked a spider.

By this point, the valiant adventurers were determined, motivated, and inspired. They wasted no time looking for treasure, clues or information in their quest to end the domination of Ladeslis, even when they weren't entirely sure who Ladeslis was. The party descended into the well that was Ladeslis' lair. Torg shed his clothes again, then leapt into the well. Kain kicked some more things.

After avoiding as many encounters and as much information as possible, the party met Ladeslis and killed him in an anticlimactic sort of way (Phil crushed his skull with a staff). They freed the life force of all of Ladeslis' victims, and were magikally transported back to Glantry where they prepared for future heroic deeds.
